Our Ingredients

Most herbal products are built for speed: buy an ingredient off a commodity list, extract it fast, bottle it, sell it. MoonMaid Botanicals was built the opposite way. We source almost everything ourselves and grow some of it on our own land. We extract slowly because slow is what the plant actually asks for. Here's a straightforward look at how that works, and why we haven't cut a corner to make it faster.

Every plant ingredient we use is organic, full stop — not "organic where convenient" or "organic for the hero ingredient." Many conventional pesticides are documented endocrine disruptors, which directly undercuts the point of using a plant meant to support your body's hormone signaling in the first place. If we can't source an ingredient organically, we don't use it. That's the whole policy, and it applies down to the smallest supporting ingredient on the label, not just the ones that get top billing.

Grown, Not Just Sourced

Sourcing organic ingredients from other farms is one level of quality control. Growing them ourselves is another. MoonMaid Botanicals owns and cultivates land in North Carolina and Florida, specifically because these regions are where our two signature herbs actually want to grow — not just where it's convenient or cheap to plant them.

Dioscorea villosa, our wild yam, is native to the woodlands of the eastern United States, and North Carolina sits well within its natural range — the moist, shaded forest conditions the plant evolved in are the same conditions we cultivate it in. Serenoa repens, our saw palmetto, is native to the coastal scrub and pine flatwoods of the southeastern U.S., and Florida is where the overwhelming majority of the world's saw palmetto supply has historically come from. Growing each plant where it already wants to grow, rather than forcing it into a more commercially convenient climate, is part of why we can stand behind the quality of what ends up in our products.

Beyond what we grow ourselves, we work directly with a small network of farmers for everything else — relationships built over years, not one-off purchase orders from a commodity supplier. Some of what comes out of those relationships isn't available through standard herbal ingredient distributors at all: smaller harvests, specific plant parts, or growing methods a large-scale commercial buyer wouldn't bother sourcing. You can't order ingredients like that from a catalog. You have to know the person growing them.

The Details Most Labels Skip

Here's one most people miss: most commercial vitamin E is derived from soybean oil processing, even in many products marketed as natural or clean. It's cheaper and more widely available, which is exactly why it's the industry default — not because it's the better choice for a product built around organic, whole-plant sourcing. We use organic, sunflower-derived vitamin E instead. It avoids the soy question entirely, and sourcing it organically means the sunflowers themselves were grown without the synthetic pesticides a lot of conventional soy crops rely on.

The same standard runs through every essential oil in our formulas, every carrier oil, every preservative and emulsifier. A product isn't as clean as its best ingredient — it's as clean as its least-considered one, and we treat every line on the ingredient list that way.

Why Our Process Takes Weeks, Not Days

A commercial herbal extract can be made in a matter of hours — heat, pressure, and a fast solvent will pull a usable amount of active compound out of almost any plant material quickly. These types of herbal extracts are commonly used today in many products available. But, that's not how we make ours. Our formulas go through a long-infusion process, letting the plant material sit in its extraction medium for weeks before it's ever considered ready. There's no faster version of this we've chosen not to use. A slow infusion gives the extraction medium time to fully draw out a plant's complex mix of compounds, rather than grabbing whatever comes out fastest under heat and pressure — the same reason a slow-simmered stock tastes different from a bouillon cube. Time itself is doing work that speed can't replicate.

This means a MoonMaid Botanicals product takes considerably longer to reach the shelf than a mass-produced equivalent. We've never seen a reason to change that. Organic isn't a claim we put on a label — it's a standard we apply to every ingredient, from the wild yam in the ground to the vitamin E most brands don't think twice about.
